Over the weekend, several iPhone and iPad owner’s throughout Australia had their phones hacked and held for random via a glitch found in the Find My iPhone application – isn’t that ironic? While the original story headline makes it seem like the phones were stolen, the users simply woke up to their phones being locked by a hacker that goes by the name “Oleg Pliss.”
Apple has yet to release a statement about the hack, due to it confirming a bug within the application that affects the device’s security.
Millions Of Smartphones Stolen Throughout The U.S.
For those who woke up to check their iPhones that morning, all they could read upon lighting up the screen was a message that read,
“Device Hacked By Oleg Pliss.”
One of the hackers victim’s tweeted out,
“Woken up at 2AM by hacked ‘Find My iPhone’ asking for money, no sleeping after trying to sort that out so at work at 6AM: Today will be fun.”
The hacker demanded between $50.00 and $100.00 before the owner’s were given the pass-code to unlock their device.
Luckily, in Lafayette – we haven’t had to deal with any type of hacking spree with iPhone’s and iPad’s, but that isn’t saying everyone isn’t at risk. With Apple essentially bragging about their security systems, they’re just tempting the hacker’s to do their thing – which just messes things up for the rest of us. As we mentioned before, Apple hasn’t released a statement regarding this incident, but some of those who were hacked have regained use of their device
