Apple sued Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and HTC Corp. for patent infringement for using the same design and technology as Apple’s iOS software. In July 2012, a jury found Samsung guilty of infringing on eight of the nine claims Apple presented at trial and awarded Apple over $930 million in damages. It also ruled that Samsung violated one claim in Apple’s 2008 patent for a “sliding mechanism for opening and closing graphical user interfaces.” The court also ordered that Samsung pay Apple $158 million in attorney fees and $399 million in costs. Apple has been sued by Samsung Electronics in various countries, such as Australia and Germany. In 2012, a judge ruled against Apple, and she awarded Samsung $119.60 per smartphone it had sold in the United States. In February 2014, the jury returned a verdict of about $930 million for Samsung. The court decided to split the award among the two parties. This means that the amount paid to Apple will be $294.52 million, and the amount to Samsung will be $525.48 million. In 2015, Apple appealed the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington D.C., but the court did not decide whether or not to overturn the previous decision.

 

Apple has been accused of infringing on four other patents.

Apple uses the technology described in its patents to allow users to unlock and wake their iOS devices by sliding a finger across a “slide to unlock” lock screen. Users can perform gestures, such as sliding their fingers up to unlock the device or sideways to move to a previous page in a book application. The patent also covers a system to wake up the device based on information stored in the credential database, which stores passwords and other sensitive data.

 

It was on January 5, 2012, that Apple was given the injunction by a German court. This ruling prohibits the sale of Motorola’s Android-powered phones in Germany for six months. Apple was told to pay a bond of around $US 1 million ($A 1.12 million) to the court, which it did on January 27, 2012. This means that Motorola Mobility is prohibited from selling its mobile phone until June 2012 in the country. This order is a victory for Apple as it means that their latest smartphones will be available to German consumers for the first time. Motorola will not be able to sell the phones in Europe unless they pay the bond money.
