For good reason, the Federal Trade Commission has officially announced that the infamous Apple Inc. will be refunding $32.5 million in purchases made by children without their parents consent. After the complaints began to pile up at an overwhelming rate – 37,000 in total – Apple has promised to reimburse each purchase made.
The FTC Chairwoman, Edith Ramirez commented, “Whether you’re doing business in the mobile arena or the mall down the street, fundamental consumer protections apply. You cannot charge consumers for purchases they did not authorize.”

She also estimated that millions of dollars have been spent by children without their parents consent. Within one of the complaints, a mother told the FTC that her daughter ended up spending $2,600 in app purchases. What Apple consumers are not aware of is that upon entering your password into the app store, a 15-minute window opens up for the child to make purchases.
“The issue is not that Apple opens up a 15-minute window for in-app purchases. What we challenge is the fact that Apple does not inform users of the existence of the window. When parents enter a password, they do not know the full scope of charges they could incur,” Ramirez also clarified.
This is not the first instance Apple has had to deal with this issue. In June, Apple refunded $100 million in app-store purchases to parents whose children were making purchases without their consent.
