When Apple first tried to stray away from Google and all their applications, they had to create their own Maps app which has been gathering complaints since its release. Aside from all the complaints, this Apple Maps app made probably one of the greatest mistakes of all time for one couple just trying to make it to the airport terminal.
Are you ready for this? Apple Maps guided this unfortunate couple to the runway of a major Alaska airport rather than putting them on the right route to the airport terminal.
Okay, so while this might be partly the driver’s fault for focusing way too much on the GPS and not noticing he was pulling onto a 200 foot wide road, the app really couldn’t lead them through the departure’s lane? Now, just because it’s in Alaska doesn’t mean it isn’t safe – because every airport tarmac has a barricade to get through before entering the runway.
According to an airport official, they have been running into this problem a lot with travelers, but the map actually ends right at the entrance of the tarmac. Thankfully there were no injuries reported, which there shouldn’t be if these people are looking at the road and see a giant airplane coming in their direction.
While this is an obvious fault of Apple Maps, people just need to focus more on the road rather than their GPS device. There is no reason to rely that much on technology – I mean, we survived a long time without it… Remember MapQuest?
