Crime rates up due to Apple products?

Unfortunately, time and testing have proven that many Apple products are not the safe haven that they once appeared to be. We’re not talking about their internal security, we’re talking about the fact that a few months ago Mayor Bloomberg of NYC stated that he thinks a major crime increase in New York is due to Apple products. He went on to say that the “slim design” and desirability of Apple products has made it easy and motivating to steal these products, therefore creating more crime. Our first thoughts were that if Apple products are the main cause of your crime, you’re not doing so bad. However, there have been higher levels of violent crimes that may or may not be attributed to people stealing Apple products off another person’s body rather than from a merchandiser.

Thieves have been known to use elaborate decoy methods and often go completely unseen when stealing from a merchandiser or store. This is what Bloomberg attributes to the design aspects of Apple products. Apple has not released a statement about any of this, but it’s safe to safe that at least in New York City, there will be a major crackdown when it comes to public awareness about outwardly toting Apple products as well as displaying them in windows, storefronts, etc. The best advice that came from this entire news report was Bloomberg’s suggestion that people place devices in tight fitting clothing so that you can feel people putting their hands into your pocket of garments. Sounds like a creepy scenario doesn’t it?

Our advice is to be smart about the way you commute throughout the city and don’t go waving your iPhone around on the subway when you’re alone. You can’t use it in most places the subway travels to, and if you’re listening to music it’s attached to your person in more than once place so you’d have to come across a pretty ballsy thief, who is also willing to risk their safety for a product that doesn’t seem like it’s worth all that effort and risk. As for other Apple products, definitely don’t break out your Apple laptop of iPad when you’re not in a safe area and if you carry those things around with you make sure that you keep them concealed until you get to your destination.

If you live in New York City and are truly feeling unsafe about keeping your Apple products on your person, then don’t. There is no reason to risk the feeling of security just so you can have your laptop or iPad with you at all times. As far as your iPhone goes, most models are small enough that you could easily conceal them in a bag or even on your person so that even if a thief thought you had one it would still be hard to recognize, which would hopefully deter the person from taking any actions against you.
