How Do I Hard Reset My iPhone?

Apple has consistently offered products that we consider very user-friendly. Although they may be great for anyone who isn’t familiar with using a smartphone, there are always things that need to be taught. One of those things that have become more and more complicated over the years is the “Hard Reset.” Hard resetting your iPhone means using a combination of buttons to reboot the device. Usually, you would hold down a power button and slide to power off. So what would be the reason to reset an iPhone hard?

First, we want to be clear that hard resetting your iPhone doesn’t cause any data loss. Many times it can be confusing to the user as to what will happen with the hard reset. A soft reset is when you power off the device generally by using the lock button. Hard restart is when you click a specific combination of buttons to trigger a reboot. Consider the action no different than pulling a battery out of a device. Again, there is no harm or risk in doing any of these actions concerning information on your device. It is just a way to stop power to your iPhone to get a fresh restart.

Now let us talk about the hard reset function that has evolved over the years. Do you remember the good old days when iPhones came with a manual? Well, if you don’t, we promise you that they did indeed have instruction manuals in the early days of the iPhone. So what happened to the manuals? It just wasn’t cost-effective for Apple to continue putting manuals with the devices when you can easily access a complete instruction guide online. Sometimes for specific customers who want to have access to the manual for their iPhone, we will put a shortcut on their homepage to easily view the information they may need. Click Here if you would like to view the Apple manual web page.

When iPhone first came out in 2007, The hard reset function was done by holding the power button and the lock button simultaneously. Holding these two buttons would be standard procedure for many years. From iPhone 2g up to iPhone 6s plus, all you had to do was hold those two buttons to force restart your iPhone. Think about that! From 2007 to 2015, everyone had a good grasp on how to reboot their hard iPhone.

Then all of a sudden, Apple decides to throw a curveball and release the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 formula for hard resetting changed to holding the power button and the volume down button. Not too hard, but how did they let everyone know about this change? They didn’t. You had to figure this change out for yourself. If you did feel proud and savvy to have figured out this technique for hard resetting your iPhone out, the feeling wouldn’t last long. Next came the iPhone 8.

So what made the iPhone 8 hard reset function so different? Apple made it feel like you were entering a cheat code to hard reset your iPhone. The iPhone 8 force restart was no longer a combination of buttons that you had to hold down, but now it was a combination of buttons that had to be pressed in a particular and timely order. Click volume up, click volume down, and hold the lock button. This new hard reset formula was definitely the most difficult for the average consumer to master. Even being in the business of repairing iPhones, it took a little while to really get us to master this hard reset technique.

Now that you have a good understanding of the hard reboot, let us share some examples of when you may need to do this. The most common reason is that your iPhone is frozen on a particular screen, and you can’t do anything. That would be a perfect time to do a hard reset. Also, if you do an update on your iPhone and it never boots back up fully, try a hard reset. Another common reason that a hard reset would come in handy is if you are using your iPhone one minute, and all of a sudden, the screen goes black. Do a hard reset. 90% of the time, a hard reset will fix these issues.
