How to Survive on 16GB of Storage

The 16GB iPhone. It’s a blessing and a curse, and it’s sticking around for the debut of the iPhone 6s and 6s plus. While it’s certainly the cheapest option (each tier of storage bumps up the price of the phone by $100), it does require some well thought out maneuvering for those of us who like to travel with all our media and information in hand. The good news is that iOS 9 will vastly improve the lives of those on team 16GB. While iOS 8 required 4.58 GB of storage, iOS 9 only requires a paltry 1.3 GB. Another fantastic innovation that Apple is introducing is app thinning, which essentially gives users the ability to download only the essential components of the app required to run on their device. Yet another great improvement-the software on your phone will now automatically remove apps and free storage space up when a software upgrade is required. The apps will then reinstall. These new features will undoubtedly make 16GB of space more feasible, but there are still some simple things you can do to make sure you never see the dreaded “not enough storage” pop up on your screen.

16GB users should absolutely be taking advantage of iCloud. Do you really need all those old photos and videos with you at all times? Probably not. You probably don’t need to carry around all your movies or tv shows either. Just transfer them to the cloud and put them back on your phone when you’ll most need them, like when you’re traveling.

Take the time to be organized. Yes, it takes some effort to sync your files to your PC, but it will free up so much space on your phone that it’s worth it. While you’re at it, delete lengthy iMessages and any messages that contain photos or videos that you no longer need. Deleting emails with large attachments will free up space as well.

Manage the storage of your apps. A lot of people don’t know this, but some apps actually cache files in order to load certain content faster. While this is convenient, it does make the app take up more space than it needs to. To see which apps are taking up more space than their initial size listed in App store, go to settings-general-usage-manage storage.
