Wave of…. The Future of the Smartphone

The history of the smartphone is an interesting one. If the history of these devices tells us anything, it’s that they advance at a rapid rate, just like other products in the consumer electronics market. The next 5 to 10 years will undoubtedly see numerous advances for smartphones, and 2017 is already looking to be an exciting year for them.

This year is going to mark the release of the Galaxy S8 from Samsung, as well as Apple’s iPhone 8. Samsung is the only one to have released the specs of their device, but it’s safe to say that both are going to be exciting devices to own. The impressive new smartphones being released makes one wonder what the ones released over the next few years will be like, and what impressive new features they will possess.

The Future of Smartphones

The Galaxy S8

These Android Nougat-powered smartphones are going to be released at the end of April 2017. They will possess an infinity screen, a bezel-less design that takes advantage of the entire length and width of the phone by making the display stretch all the way across it. The phone has a 12MP camera, 4K video recording, and an 8MP front-facing camera. One of the most impressive features of the S8 is the AMOLED screen, which is going to push Apple to have a similar display in order to compete.

Another cool feature on the S8 is its ability to use facial recognition to unlock the phone. All someone has to do is look at their phone and it will recognize their face to unlock their S8 for them. However, Samsung does acknowledge that the facial recognition method is not as secure as other methods for unlocking the phone.

The iPhone 8 (or iPhone X)

The tech world doesn’t know as much about the iPhone 8 as it does about the S8. Apple is notoriously secretive about their new smartphones before they get released, and it’s only a short time before the release of the phone that they start letting people know the features of the phone.

The next iPhone doesn’t even have a sure name yet. Chronologically, it would be the iPhone 8, following the iPhone 7 from last year. But since it’s the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, many are speculating that this next smartphone will actually be called the iPhone X.

Other rumors for the next iPhone include an OLED screen and a bezel-less display similar to the one on the Samsung S8. The iPhone 8 or X will have the A11 chip in it, just like the 7 and 7 Plus. Wireless charging is another feature that many people are hoping to see in this year’s edition of the iPhone.

Smart Device Users & Owners for Generations to Come

They say the customer is always right, and that’s certainly been true when it comes to the features that continue to be implemented into smartphones. Whatever the consumer electronics world calls for seems to find its way into the next edition of the top smartphones that get released.

The future is looking bright for these devices. A healthy competition between manufacturers pushes them to continue to push out impressive products. The removal of the headphone jack by Apple was a bold move, but it shows that these tech companies are willing to take risks in the name of innovation. Who knows what features the iPhone may have 10 years from now.

Some features that people would certainly like to see are a 4K display, which is certainly doable within the next few years. They would also like to see a keyboard that could attach to the smartphone, truly making it function more like a computer than a phone. These and other advancements could be seen in the next decade or so.
